Mezzanine Music Makers
On Monday night, before the Oregon Symphony performance at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Sam and Becca Schrader (16 and 13) performed their Mozart duets in front of a mezzanine full of symphony goers.
Their duet coach, Joel Belgique, principal violist in the Oregon Symphony, took time out from his own concert preparations - in full concert dress - to introduce the kids and watch their entire 25 minute performance.
Sam and Becca played very well and received nice applause from the audience after each short piece. But don't take my somewhat biased word for it. Joel himself was positively beaming with praise. In addition, standing next to Joel during the performance was a man I could not have recognized. Joel told me later that this man, who has recently moved to Portland, was formerly a violist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. And it was this guy's observation that the kids played very well indeed.
Congrats to Sam and Becca on a job well done. I've posted a couple of pictures too.
